About us
The origin of Indian Council of Social Welfare was in 1947, when it was inaugurated in the name of "Indian Conference of Social Work" at the first all India conference of Social Work held at Mumbai on 6th November 1947.
Justice Chagla was the first chairman and Shri Jamshedji Mehta, the renowned politician and social worker was the first President.
Second all India conference was held in Madras in 1948.
Ministry of Social Welfare at the centre and Department of Social welfare in the States was founded mainly as a result of the initiative of ICSW.
From 1956 on wards state branches were formed and now it has state branches in all the states of India.
ICSW was instrumental to establish school of social work in Madras and Hyderabad
Main conferences and seminars was held in past were: -
- All India conference on Social work held in Mumbai in 1947
- 2nd all India conference held at Madras in 1948
- Conference of Labour and Welfare in April 1956 at Mumbai
- National Seminar on Spot Light of children in 1971 at Cochin
- National seminar on Facilitating in country adoption in March 1989 at Mumbai
- Orientation programme for Judiciary on Child adoption in October 2002
- Consultative workshop on Child adoption at Pune in September 2010.
- Consultative workshop on Child adoption at Mumbai in December 2010.
ICSW office bearers have represented in many international and South Asia Regional Conferences held at Montreal, Tokyo, Singapore, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, New Zealand and Paris and presented papers on social work related issues.
